Hey everyone,
I wanted to post this painting for several reasons. I recently interviewed with a potential client and was inspired by their ideas so this was the result of that. It also served as a little exercise I'm taking part of with my team, and that is to paint for one hr a day. This painting has two sessions within it and I think I'm around 3-4 hrs. On this weekend where we all reflect on the events of 9/11 I find myself watching the news and surfing the web, looking for 9/11 information. I have been researching and watching informational videos on the subject for many years now. Hey guys, so for Father's Day I received a really cool gift from my wife. A set of wide copic markers. This paint over comes from my first sketch with them. I also want to discuss the fact that I have been using my searching lines in my drawings to tighten up designs and help me paint on them. Hey everyone. So this is what I handed in to compete for an interview with 38 Studios. I tried very hard to create a moment in time in which your character might encounter during the game. In my mind this turns into a boss battle. First monster ants come out of it and then the tree activates to life.

Maybe you have to get to the horns somehow to defeat the tree. OHHHHH and I bought my first Syd Mead book and I'm inspired to the highest level. I'm going to post some marker renders. I could write a thesis on why I love his art so much!!!!

Hello out there, here is an update and I'm about to move forward to the low poly. Found out I have a few extra days to work so I added the extra vines holding the graphic icon. I like the mushrooms I added around the sculpt as well. Side note, my opinion of zbrush being awesome is now even bigger with the added feature of shadowbox. Definitely check it out.

Hey everyone I'm posting to share the results of an art test I have taken for a studio down south. The challenge was to create a 1,200 poly zombie character and texture it using a 512X512. I must say for an test I had a great deal of fun and for reference used the mailman from Seinfeld. Newman!!!!!! Anyhow I was really pumped about the 2 head drawings in upper left hand corner of the concept page and excited about the personality in the final model.

This was an idea for something at my last job that never made it. A demon catapult that throws massive mine balls that explode over the enemy to rain down magic bone fragments like a cluster bomb. I found it buried in a folder so I decided to keet going on it. I thought it would make for a great toy.

First off it is so frigin good to be home with the family together. Emily is doing fantastic and we go for our follow up in early Feb. Watching are little girl fight to get better for 2 months straight has made me a different man. She is only 11 months old but has already taught me so much. If my wife wasn't such a big help during all of this I really don't know how I would have made it through. I love you babe.

These sketches were done during the late nights awake at the hospital. I worked on technical drawing, penmanship and one point perspective a lot during this time and had many drawings to edit through. These are the ones I enjoyed. My wife actually picked most of them. Happy to be home and blogging again!!!!!!!!!!!!

Frank Frezetta died yesterday and I wanted to post a little tribute. I like so many others love Frazettas work. If I had to descibe a Frazetta painting in one word I would say masterful. He had an insane ability to depict light and shade. The other thing about his work is it always looks as if he is having fun. Hello, found a home for the post below. Going to be a mining vehicle used to run power cords into the mining shafts, which will reach deep into the earth. Have to thank Ted for that one. This drawing is of Riggs in a transit staion, swiping an access card. He's getting a token so he can go home. There should be more people!!! I have also come up with a sentence in which i can describe what I want the viewer to take away from the story. I think this is important because now i can start filling in the piecses with better focus.

this post is cool for me cause i can show u guys a new process I have embraced. So zbrush has a new feature and it basically allows me to just lay in these long tubes made of balls. I can move them, scale them, and draw them on the surface in many unique ways. After like a minute the sketch takes on a life of its own. Just a seriously awesome thing. This guy is a robot in the Healer. I love the guys who come up with this shit. Pixologic thank you...LOL

City Sports Released

City Sports is our latest title to be released and I only have great things to say about this project. When you get to be part of something that everyone is excited about it is a lot of fun. I watched our team work together and accomplish some pretty big goals.
The biggest goal for the art team was building an art direction to blend characters, environments and Huds together. I do not consider this to be an easy task. In fact it's our toughest. I posted this particular painting because I think it was that one thing we could always go to when we needed an answer.
Some highlights- Chris and Carissa's cast of characters (very fun to end up as Paul)
Yin's single player environment (Yeah it worked!!)
Andrews hockey scene and pigeons (pulled together what I considered a failed design on my end, the hockey painting)
Jeffs animation in kickball (I always like when there is life)
and for me, well my biggest moment was catching Jeff using the pencil tool to paint a texture!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Animators (should have kept the shooting...lol seriously game is full of life)

Oh yeah and the programmers did ok on this one to..........LOL.......good job guys!!!!

An update on the sculpt. I started posing him and reworking his anatomy to fit. I can feel him moving so that's a good thing. I have been studying one of my favorites, Richard Macdonald. GOOD structure and pushing life is the focus here.

For some stupid reason I have always felt if I have to go to reference for assistance than I'm not a good artist. Like I'm not intelligent or something. I don't know where I got that from but thanks to the guys at work I'm starting to break that train of thought. I'm invisioning Chris Farley right now slapping himself saying...your so stupid, stupid!!!!!!!!!!!!

So I posted the crab painting on a art website and I recieved a really good crit. Basically said I need to be more clear. Being more clear means more inteligent. This is the first drawing/painting I have done since that crit.

On a side note the design is based off of a memory from my old job. There was a diesel mechanic there who could fix anyhting and he had cool equiptment to work with.

A couple good friends of mine at work designed a game that I really see a great amount of potential in. This was done for fun, on personnel time. My own interpretation of the main characters ship. On the bottom rt and lt are 2 massive thrusters, igniting like blowtorches. The cockpit is designed so the pilot can see out in all directions, making sure not to make contact with anything.

I came home tonight ready to practice something I am just starting to study. Light. Another thing I want to comment on is ever since I started studying to be an artist, the main goal was to see the best I possibly could. I don't think I ever really understood that until very very recently. Something is happening in the way I am seeing the page. I am kinda starting to see whats not there. I want to get to a point where that is all the time. Another way to say this is I'm not guessing as much.

healer first boss fight

Everyone at work loves boss fights. The healer is going to have insanely hard to go through levels and then at the end, reward the player with an insanely hard boss fight. I want this game to be hard to play. This drawing is a boss you will meet in the game.

I'm watching a gears concept tutorial and this drawing is clearly inspired by the gears universe. God I love this field.

Also included is a drawing with his weapon attached. This rock spins and if hits you at the right angle kills u, one shot.

Here is another z-brush sketch. Basically starting from the sphere primitive and modeling something from it. I have been having fun doing that as of late. I feel like I'm getting back in the sculpting game. I have had medusa in my head for a while now and thought it would be fun to do a design of her. Hope everyone had a great weekend!!!!! The main villain in the Healer is Lord Tartan. I hate the name. Anyhow this is his body. He is fused to this contraption. He fuses into other things to get around depending on his needs. His left hand also can be fused into things. He is a man in pain for so many reasons and also a man of seething anger.

rough painting of a weapons plant, the weapon in which it creates, and the third image is of a mining transport. I'm in the process of painting it up to make it more clear. Think of the design as an eighteen wheeler with a flatbed attached to it. that part has been cut off some and I'm in the process of thinking it out.
