drawing done for friends daughter

This drawing is very special. My wife and I have some old friends which are going through a very difficult time. Their daughter of two years was diagnosed with a rare cancer. Courtney described her child as a warrior princess. I felt like taking those words and illustrating them. There is good news, little Delaney is living up to that name and winning the battle each and everyday.

Art is a funny thing sometimes. You can go years not understanding something and then somebody says something to you and BAM you get it. Like an awakening. I have been battling paint, value and color for so long I thought I would never get it. This painting makes me excited in fact I haven't been this pumped up in a long time. I just feel I'm headed in a positive direction with my painting and I have never felt like this before.

On my last vacation my wife and I went to see my father and his new wife out in Arizona. There is a whole art community devoted to the west. I find it to be one of my favorite types of art. This project was inspired by that trip. It also has gone wrong from the start and the amount of technical problems in this model is making it difficult to continue.

I had a lot of fun painting this. I found myself making sound effects and thinking out a possible story. Stuff I used to do when I was a kid.....lol.

Painted on some sort of rag paper in gouache. The scan I had killed the color. It looks different than the original.

This is a sketch of a spaceman checking on the time. Going to end up being a painting. As of right now I want to rethink the right arm and hand, and position of everything. I really want to get a space ship in the background. I'm thinking the painting will end up wider, like a 16x9 ratio. Colors blues, violets, grays, a bit of green for the display on arm, possibly projecting color up onto the helmet area. Tons in my head, lets see what happens.
